Overview

OVERVIEW

BOBA, BOBA, BOBA!

This is a personal passion project brought up by my own life-long love for boba drinks. Growing up in San Francisco, I found boba tea to be a normal inclusion in our already culturally vast city— I wanted to share my love and passion towards this delicious drink with informative design.

DESIGN PROCESS

Brainstorming Questions

Knowing that I wanted to create a booklet that gave general information on Taiwan's influence on San Francisco's drink culture, I asked myself several questions before jumping into design:

Question 1

What would capture peoples' interest visually when walking past this little booklet?

Question 2

What colors would get readers' attention?

Question 3

What information would people find useful if they were to carry around this booklet in San Francisco?

MATERIALIZE

Writing the content

Once I have an idea of my general layout, I wanted to develop content that would both educate the reader as well as show off boba that is popular within San Francisco. I started with the basic history of Taiwanese boba drinks and flowed into it's influence on the Golden Gates.

1) History of Boba in Taiwan

2) Boba's influence on San Francisco drink culture

3) San Francisco's gratitude towards boba's origin

4) Recommendation intro and list of locations

DESIGN THINKING

Striking yet Simple

I also wanted to create a striking yet minimalistic cover that would draw passer-bys to pick up and read the booklet. From there, I kept the title simple, BOBA, BOBA, BOBA. For a finishing touch, I included a boba straw with pearls inside to tie together the theme with. the minimalistic design.

I chose Lexan Pro in Extra Bold for that loud screaming "BOBA" title.

From there, I started experimenting with color.

Color Choice

I wanted to evoke excitement and joy using the color yellow. Often times used for fun-themes and to create explosive visuals. In order to make the same color pop off the page, I utilized Blacks and dark greys along with ripped-paper beneath text to further highlight bodies of text.

MATERIALIZE

Finalizing

After writing up historically-accurate content with the help of AI to find appealing language, I was able to follow the sketches I had in mind and experiment with placement and use of the chosen color pallet.

ATTRIBUTIONS & REFERENCES

Credit is Due

Throughout this project, I researched numerous sites, articles and used stock images to enhance my designs besides using AI for some visual elements.

WRAPPING UP

Takeaways

Throughout the process of designing this booklet, I realized how far personal love for the product can drive the content and visuals. My goal from here on out is to find elements of my client's product that I love and fully expand upon it when designing for their brand. Here are a few other things I took away from this project:

  • Patience in the printing process.

  • Impact of basic color pallets and use of textures.

  • Experimenting with the use of AI when crafting content in order to create more interesting language while continuing to edit further with my own ideas.

Thank you for reading!
